A 17-year-old has tragically died in a car crash that also left a man critically injured.
The tragedy happened on the A19 northbound carriageway between Seaham and the Herrington Interchange at Sunderland on Monday evening. The girl is understood to have been a passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by the man.
Northumbria Police said the Corsa left the carriageway and then became involved in a collision. The car then caught fire. While the blaze was extinguished shortly afterwards, the teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver has been taken to the hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, police said.
