NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) - Champions Park is officially under the ownership of Newberry, following months of back-and-forth talks.

“Newberry is always up for the challenge,” said Tim Marden, Mayor of Newberry.

Newberry is now in full control of Champions Park. The partnership between Newberry and Alachua County faced some tension during the summer, but the deal is now finalized.

Back in 2009, Newberry leaders reached out for funding from Alachua County to help construct Champions Park, which resulted in the county investing over $8 million in tourist-tax money. In return, Newberry agreed to manage all operations and maintenance without requesting more money from the county.
