On Monday, Edmonton Opera announced it was scrubbing the scheduled performance of Indians on Vacation , an opera based on the famous comedic novel from American-Canadian literary giant Thomas King.
That announcement came shortly after King made it public that he had been mistaken about his Indigenous heritage; he had no Cherokee ancestry, as he had claimed for decades. It was another “pretendian” controversy, bringing back memories of Buffy Sainte-Marie, whose Order of Canada was terminated this year after questions arose about her Indigenous roots. King has long been established as one of the great Indigenous literary voices not only in Canada, but around the world.
