WAUNAKEE — As students prepare for a few days off from school for Thanksgiving break, some young children may be getting ready to practice social skills with friends and family.
Encouraging positive social interactions for the children born during the peak of the pandemic is the focus in most kindergarten classrooms this school year.
UW Health clinical psychologist Shanda Wells says there were some slight social setbacks from birth to age five.
“For this cohort of children, a small percentage of them do seem to have bigger lags in terms of like social communication and social/emotional skills,” explained Wells. “This research is showing only 2-3 percent more in kids at this age group than we would expect. So it’s not that its not there, it’s just ever so slight.”
