MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A pile of improperly discarded cigarettes caused an apartment fire Monday on Madison’s west side, the Madison Fire Department reported.
According to MFD, firefighters responded around 1:45 p.m. to the 6500 block of Schroeder Road after people reported smoke in the building.
Crews went into the building and found smoke coming from a second-floor apartment.
Firefighters evacuated a dog and one person out of the apartment as fire alarms were going off.
Firefighters searched inside the apartment’s bathroom and found a smile pile of remnants still burning in a trash can. The pile consisted of discarded cigarette butts and other smoking materials, MFD stated.
Firefighters put out the rest of the smoke with water and aired out the apartment and the hallway.
