Ohio has become the 45th state to allow name, image and likeness at the high-school level following the passing of an emergency bylaw referendum on Nov. 21, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Nov. 24.

The new bylaw, which had 447 schools vote in favor of the referendum while 121 were against and 247 abstained, will go into immediate effect.

Student athletes under OHSAA schools will be able to enter into agreements and be compensated for their name, image and likeness through appearances, licensing, social media, endorsements and/or the use of branding that is based on their public recognition or notoriety. Reporting procedures and limitations are included in the passage to ensure students do not affect their eligibility with the OHSAA’s recruiting and amateur bylaws.
