MUSKEGON, MI – The type and volume of evidence used to convict Shanda Vander Ark of murder for torturing her son to death was massive, her trial attorney testified.

One piece of evidence – surveillance footage showing the boy’s final moments alive – was so horrific that jurors did not see the video.

Vander Ark, 46, appeared Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Muskegon County Courthouse for a hearing in pursuit of a new trial. She was cuffed at the wrists and ankles, wearing a blue and orange prison jumpsuit.

Vander Ark is asking the court to grant her a retrial after she was convicted of first-degree murder for orchestrating brutal punishments that led to the death of her son, 15-year-old Timothy Ferguson.
