On Thursday, November 13, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a $10,000 bonus for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees who "served with exemplary service" without pay during the 44-day U.S. government shutdown, which ended a day earlier on November 12.
However, out of the 50,000 TSA employees who worked unpaid, the agency confirmed only those with perfect attendance would qualify, sparking conversations about fairness. Legality was also brought up; one union says the payout is illegal. But another complaint remains: some TSA employees think "the 10K bonus is BS," and the reasons were revealed to TheTravel by a former TSA officer.
