The federal Bureau of Prisons is shutting down its Terminal Island facility near Los Angeles over concerns about crumbling infrastructure, including falling concrete that threatens to knock out the facility’s heating system, according to an internal memo obtained by the Associated Press.
Director William K. Marshall III said in a message to staff Tuesday that the agency is suspending operations at the Federal Correctional Institution, Terminal Island, a low-security prison with about 1,000 male inmates on the California coast.
The decision to close the facility, at least temporarily, “is not easy, but is absolutely necessary,” Marshall said.
