WATERLOO, Iowa — A local family is celebrating a new chapter as they prepare to move into their new home, thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

The house, located in the Churchill neighborhood, marks a significant milestone for the family. Construction on the project began in May.

Applying to purchase a Habitat for Humanity home can take years. Selected families must contribute more than 300 sweat-equity hours to aid in the construction and complete required classes.

"It is a pretty robust program with the 300 hours of sweat equity and the homebuyer education that we offer," Mandy Mahncke, program director at Habitat for Humanity, said. "I do think it goes from excitement to maybe I'm a little bit overwhelmed and then in the end, it's like look what I was able to accomplish."
