EDGEFIELD, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 59-year-old man is facing up to 40 years in prison, according to the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say what began as a cyber investigation resulted in the confiscation of electronic items from the home and the arrest of Wayne Stanley Newsome, 59, of Cedar Creek Road.

Early Tuesday morning, investigators assisted the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force unit with executing a search warrant at his home.

The sheriff’s office says he is charged with sexual exploitation of a minor in the third degree.

“Keeping our children safe from internet predators is foremost in our mission,” Sheriff Jody Rowland said.
