BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Some extra money will be coming to many educators in the Birmingham school system.

The Birmingham Board of Education approved a $1,000 bonus for regular, full-time teachers during a special-called meeting, with distribution set for Dec. 22 before classes go on winter break.

Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Mark Sullivan said it is the board's hope that the funds will help support their employees after another successful year in the district.

The board also approved a contract extension for Sullivan during the meeting.

More details about his new contract are being gathered, and updates will be provided as the information becomes available.
