TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma City Council is considering changing portions of a law designed to protect tenants from eviction and high rent prices, two years after voters approved the measure called the Landlord Fairness Act, also known as the Tenant Bill of Rights.
The proposed changes have sparked debate between some housing justice advocates who say the protections are essential to keeping people housed and safe. Some property owners and housing providers say the regulations have created financial burdens that could reduce the city's rental housing supply and even cause negative impacts to the renters once evicted.
The housing justice group Tacoma for All, which pushed for the Landlord Fairness Act's passage two years ago, is now working to preserve the tenant protections.
