A traffic stop ended with the arrest of a driver who fled troopers on foot while tossing a loaded handgun into the grass, New York State Police announced on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Jubbar K. Singleton, 53, of Amsterdam, was arrested after troopers tried to pull over his vehicle for a traffic violation near Lafayette Street in Schenectady, at about 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, according to the release. The vehicle fled and was later found unoccupied near Erie Boulevard with help from the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office, police said.
Singleton was seen a short time later returning to the vehicle and trying to get into the driver’s seat, troopers detailed. When they approached him, he allegedly ran off and was seen throwing a loaded, illegally possessed handgun into a nearby grassy area.
He was quickly taken into custody, and troopers recovered the handgun, according to State Police.
Singleton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the second degree, and numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law violations, State Police said.
He was taken to SP Princetown for processing after a medical evaluation and then transported to the Schenectady County Correctional Facility to await arraignment, according to the release.
