VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach City Council members paused a vote that could raise their own salaries on Tuesday night.
This comes after several residents spoke up during a previous public hearing and said they’re against the proposed salary increase.
“Members who 'feel they need more money' should quit the council and find something else to do. For goodness’s sake, it’s public service, not a career,” a man said Tuesday night.
The proposal would have nearly doubled council members’ salaries, with an increase from $28,000 to about $48,500 a year.
For Mayor Bobby Dyer, under the proposal, his pay would move from $30,000 to nearly $52,000 a year.
On Tuesday, Mayor Dyer said the people spoke and council listened and unanimously agreed to defer the vote on the pay increase.
