One month after the New Mexico Court of Appeals cleared the way for Santa Fe to begin collecting a voter-approved 3% excise tax on the amount of home sales over $1 million, the city has received its first three payments, Mayor Alan Webber said Tuesday.
“It’s only been a matter of a month or so, and already the excise tax is doing what it was predicted to do, which is bringing in money for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which couldn’t be more timely,” Webber said in an interview.
To date, he said the city has received nearly $59,000 — a check for $36,000 and wire transfers of $17,550 and $5,175 — from three home sales qualifying for the excise tax, sometimes called a “mansion tax,” which applies to the value of a home sale in the city over $1 million.
