Dogs abandoned in shelters or spending much of their lives confined to kennels are sadly far too common.

Older dogs in particular face bleak prospects, as many owners lose interest, and adopters often pass their kennels without a second look.

For senior mother dogs, the heartbreak is even greater when they watch their puppies leave for forever homes while they themselves remain behind. This happens frequently, as the demand for puppies consistently outweighs interest in adult dogs.

Such was the reality for a German Shepherd named Star, only months after being abandoned by her family and left in a Maryland shelter.
