GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A structure fire broke out on North Sycamore Street around midnight on Wednesday, causing over $10,000 in damages.
There were no injuries. Water damage from firefighting efforts is suspected to cause most of the $10,000 to $20,000 in losses.
“A lot of people don’t think about that being the cause of the damage, the water used to put out the fire, but that’s just the nature of the beast,” Battalion Chief Scott Kuehl said.
According to Kuehl, the fire started in an alley and spread to the attic of a garage that had been converted into a housing unit.
A passerby noticed the fire, warned the occupants and called 911.
All four Grand Island fire stations extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.
A housing unit on the other side of the alley also had exposure dam
