The Carer's Allowance scandal has left Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) claimants left too scared to tell their families over payment demands from the government.
Unpaid carers are being chased and pursued by the DWP over overpayments - following mistakes which were not their fault. As part of the damning new Sayce report, which has slammed the DWP for its failings, claimants have spoken out.
One told the inquiry team they “lost weight, I couldn’t sleep” after being told to pay back money to the DWP in a letter. And another didn’t tell their own family. “I felt so shocked. I felt shame,” they said.
