The state Department of Law Enforcement and partner agencies collected 724 pounds of fireworks during a buyback amnesty event Sunday at the Honolulu Police Department’s Training Academy in Waipahu.
Of that total, 510 pounds were classified as illegal fireworks, including nearly 10% that are restricted for professional use only. A total of $2,355 in gift cards were distributed to participants in exchange for turning in their fireworks.
This marked the third and final fireworks buyback event of the year.
With Thanksgiving fast approaching and Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner, officials urged residents to remain vigilant.
