Grateful for $5 million to start designing an estimated-$91-million new headquarters , Sarnia’s police board is also keeping Plan B in mind, its chairperson says.

“Right now we’re hopeful that the $5 million that city council has approved for us will stick, and then that’s going to be our focus,” said Paul Wiersma.

Sarnia city council v oted 5-4 Tuesday to borrow $5 million to start the new 9,300-square-metre (100,000-square-foot) police station project.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, who said Tuesday “this is not the year” for such an investment, amid affordability concerns, could still veto that decision.

Coun. Bill Dennis agreed with Bradley and said he’s heard no support for the project from people he’s spoken with.
