Newman senior George Loop had gone several months without being able to run at full speed. So, when the football season began, first-year head coach Aaron Vice was unsure about the kind of player Loop could be.

An early indicator came on the first play from scrimmage in a Week 4 game against The Willow School, when Loop caught a quick pass toward the sideline, evaded a defender and sprinted up the field for a touchdown.

Finally, Loop could run without thinking about the hamstring tear that caused him to miss an entire baseball season and most of the summer workouts with his football teammates.

“It was a rough time for me,” Loop said about the time he missed. “Because I was just watching everyone play, and you’re just standing on the sideline.”
