National Farmers Union has released the annual Thanksgiving Edition of the “Farmer’s Share of the Food Dollar,” revealing stark inequities in America’s food system.
Farmers continue to receive only pennies on the dollar for foods typically consumed for Thanksgiving dinner despite high grocery prices.
"Consumers are paying more for their food, and producers are paid less, while the corporate monopolies are making record profits," Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer said. "We need more competition in the marketplace and the enforcement of the antitrust laws to ensure a fair price for both the consumer and the producer. If we enforced the antitrust rules and reigned in the anticompetitive practices of the corporations, there would be money for our communities and our families
