COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - While winter officially begins in the middle of December, the meteorological winter starts Dec. 1 and runs through the end of February.

Meteorological seasons follow the calendar for consistency in weather and climate reporting.

The Winter Solstice, which marks the shortest day of the year, falls on Dec. 21.

When it comes to winter weather, we hope for snow every year, but we’re not always that lucky. The last time Columbia recorded two inches of snow was on Jan. 21, 2022.

That same system produced about three inches of snow near Lugoff. Exactly three years later, on Jan. 21, 2025, we saw our next significant winter event. Columbia picked up around one inch, while up to four inches were reported near Orangeburg.
