A professional minor league hockey player from Maplewood suffered a serious spinal cord injury during a game over the weekend.
Forward Justin Thompson plays for the Macon Mayhem, a minor league team based in Macon, Georgia.
At their game on Saturday, Thompson writes he was "hit awkwardly into the boards" and broke his neck. Video of his injury has been published on social media.
He was rushed to the hospital, and underwent surgery to repair his neck on Tuesday.
Thompson writes the surgery was successful, calling it “a literal miracle.”
“It’s been a very emotional few days for me and again I can’t express how grateful I am to all of you and most importantly my lord and savior Jesus Christ,” Thompson wrote on Facebook.
