With the festive season here and shopping lists growing longer and more frequent, a prominent doctor is urging people to know the risks of paper receipts, warning of possible health consequences.

Longevity specialist Dr Sabine Donnai, who established the upmarket American health clinic Viavi, said she would never handle a receipt and encouraged those who deal with them regularly to wear protective gloves.

Speaking on the Zoe Science and Nutrition podcast about the damaging effects of micro-plastics, Dr Donnai disclosed that numerous paper receipts, particularly in the US, contain a hazardous chemical called Bisphenol-A (BPA),
