Royal Oak — Detroit Zoo visitors will soon see a small, new four-legged friend as part of the zoo's giraffe family.

The zoo announced this week that a baby giraffe was born Sunday morning. The female calf was standing on all fours and nursing by Monday, according to a post by the Detroit Zoo on Facebook.

The calf was born to Zara, a 7-year-old giraffe, and her father Jabari, a 17-year-old giraffe who has been at the Detroit Zoo since 2008, according to the zoo.

"The giraffe building will remain temporarily closed to give Zara and her calf time to bond," said the zoo, which will introduce the calf to the public based on Zara's comfort.

The zoo spoke highly of the calf's birth in light of "serious threats" to the world giraffe population.
