DETROIT — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested an associate professor at Ferris State University in Detroit earlier this month.

ICE announced the arrest of Sumith Gunasekera on Tuesday, detailing that he is living in the country illegally. ICE officers arrested him in Detroit on Nov. 12.

He's from Sri Lanka, and ICE said he is not eligible for legal status in the U.S. because of his criminal past.

Federal authorities said police in Ontario arrested Gunasekera in 1998 for uttering death threats. Then, three days later, ICE said he was arrested again for invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference. Federal authorities said Gunasekera admitted to officers that this charge was related to a minor.
