FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) is asking residents to avoid a portion of Lafayette Street on the city’s south side as crews respond to a gas leak.

Police sent a Public Safety Alert around 12:10 p.m., asking everyone to avoid the area of South Lafayette and East Leith Streets, including surrounding side streets, as they work to repair a gas line break.

FWPD Public Information Officer Jonathan Cutler says the water department was working in the area when they clipped a 6-inch gas line just before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Cutler says it could take roughly 6 hours for them to repair the leak.

The safety alert will pop up on residents’ phones when they are within a 5-mile radius of the area, Cutler notes.

This is a developing report and will be updated as soon
