DES MOINES, Iowa —

The Des Moines Public Schools Board is trying to figure out how to manage its staff as student enrollment drops.

The district gets state funding based on the number of students enrolled. The board said it needs to cut $13.3 million in staff salaries to match how much it is now getting from the state.

The district said it spends 83% of its budget on its staff.

During Tuesday's meeting, the board discussed potential adjustments to staff based on the number of students enrolled in each school. The change would also keep class sizes smaller.

District leaders are also trying to figure out different ways to bring in more money and address the $13.3 million gap. They said they won't make any changes until the start of next year.
