GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A father admitted he could have opened fire when he found a man inside his Rockford home, stabbing an 11-year-old girl .

Dan Timmer said he’s received backlash for not shooting Ricardo Perez Castillo after encountering him during a violent home invasion.

Timmer told the judge on Wednesday, Nov. 26, it was difficult to be in the courtroom just before Castillo was sentenced to a minimum 19 years in prison for the attack.

“We’ve heard what he wanted to do to our family,” Timmer said. “We’ve heard what he wanted to do to my daughter and my daughter’s friend.”

Castillo entered Timmer’s home in the morning hours on June 15, 2024. Castillo did not know the family but planned to kill everyone inside, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office
