SPOKANE, Wash. — A former Pasco police officer convicted of killing a woman in Spokane nearly four decades ago has appealed his case.

In March 2024, Richard Aguirre was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 1986 murder of Ruby Doss. Aguirre was found guilty of the murder in December 2023 after a lengthy investigation.

Ruby Doss' body was found near the old Spokane Playfair Race Course in 1986. For decades, investigators could not find a suspect in her death. Then, in 2015, a forensic scientist matched DNA on a condom found near Doss' body to former Pasco police officer Richard Aguirre.

In 2016, Aguirre was charged with Doss' murder, but due to a lack of evidence, the charge was dropped a year later. Years later, in 2023, a judge ultimately found Aguirre guilty of first-degree murder
