Mélanie Joly, Canada’s federal industry minister, has refuted rumors suggesting she is in line to become the country’s ambassador to France amid an anticipated cabinet reshuffle. Reports from various sources indicated that Joly was "looking to be appointed" to the prestigious position. However, during a video press conference from Japan, Joly firmly stated, "Absolutely not," when asked about her interest in the role. Joly emphasized her commitment to her current responsibilities, saying, "I’m focused on my job right now, which is to be the minister of industry, and to fight for every single job in this country at a time of trade tensions, and so I’ll continue to do that." The ambassadorial position in Paris is considered one of Canada’s most esteemed diplomatic roles. It often serves as a reward for notable service in domestic politics and can also be a strategic placement for individuals who have served long in federal cabinet. This role is typically viewed as the francophone equivalent of the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, currently held by Ralph Goodale, a former senior Liberal cabinet minister. Stéphane Dion, a former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, is the current ambassador to France. Bill Blair, who served as minister of national defense until May, is reportedly a candidate to succeed Goodale. Previous ambassadors include Lawrence Cannon, who was Quebec lieutenant to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Joly expressed her desire to remain in her industry portfolio, especially given the significant economic challenges facing Canadian industries. She stated, "I have a very strong sense of duty towards my country, and I’m very much aware that we have to be able to engage with the private sector and also with governments, so two of my expertises, which is business and at the same time geopolitics, are actually very useful for Canada right now." As the situation develops, Joly’s focus remains on her current role, where she aims to address the pressing economic issues affecting the nation.
