An air quality advisory was issued for Edmonton Wednesday due to elevated pollution levels.

Those conditions are expected throughout Wednesday afternoon and could continue into the night.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) for the Alberta capital and its surrounding area was categorized as “high risk” bordering on “very high risk” — the worst across Canada.

Environment Canada says Edmontonians should limit time outdoors and consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

The weather authority says symptoms could range from headaches, irritation or mild cough to wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.
