DIX HILLS, Suffolk County (WABC) -- Suffolk County police have issued a warning that they are stepping up enforcement on what has come to be called "Blackout Wednesday."

The increased patrols are part of a larger effort to keep people safe from drunk drivers during the holiday season.

The holiday rush is upon us, especially out on the roads. Traditionally, authorities say this Wednesday evening is often a rush to the bars before Thanksgiving Day.

Last year, drinking and driving brought a number of crashes.

"There will be tragedies in Suffolk County more than likely. There certainly will be multiple tragedies across the state and across the country because again, this is the biggest bar night of the year," Raymond Tierney, Suffolk County District Attorney, said.
