GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - An Ohio man accused of murder in Nebraska remains at the Lincoln Regional Center (LRC), unfit to stand trial.

Court records show James Thompson, 22, is accused of killing 72-year-old Gary Weaver of Eureka, Missouri, in June 2024 at a rest stop near Grand Island. He is charged with murder, assault and five weapons charges.

On Tuesday, Judge Andrew Butler ruled Thompson unfit to stand trial yet again. His next hearing is Jan. 20, 2026.

In October last year, Thompson pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and in December he asked to represent himself at trial.

During a hearing in January, Thompson told the judge that he could do a better job than his public defender and claimed that he had created the laws governing the trial.
