EUGENE, Ore. - Eugene's automated license plate readers (ALPRs) made a significant impact on recovering stolen vehicles, according to the Eugene Police Department.
EPD officials said that these devices have reduced recovery times by 30%, bringing the average down to 15.3 hours.
In the past 11 months, there have been 358 stolen vehicle cases in Eugene. The ALPRs have not only improved recovery times but may also be deterring thefts, police said. Eugene Police found that vehicle theft numbers have been trending down more sharply than expected.
This enhancement in recovery times is a major improvement compared to nearly 50 hours in 2024 and approximately 44 hours in 2023. In October, Eugene's city council voted to turn the cameras off amidst concerns raised by citizens related to privacy.
