For decades, The New Mexican has kept up a holiday tradition: A series celebrating 10 outstanding volunteers that seeks to raise awareness of their important causes and promote volunteerism in Northern New Mexico.
This year — to mark the tradition's 40th anniversary — we continue the practice with our 10 Who Made a Difference honorees for 2025.
The series kicks off with a look into the good works of Phyllis and Judge Johnson, who founded a new nonprofit this year to provide no-cost home furnishings for newly-housed people.
It acknowledges Jean Palmer's tireless — and ongoing — advocacy efforts for Santa Fe's homeless residents.
It recognizes Tom Alexander for encouraging empathy for animals and Walter Futrell for improving local trails.
It commends Anne Wheelock Gonzales and Monte
