ST PAUL, Minn. — Twenty-one states, including Minnesota, are suing the Trump administration over SNAP benefits.
Attorney General Keith Ellison and 20 of his AG colleagues are suing to block new guidance from the USDA that would make some immigrants ineligible for SNAP benefits. Specifically, refugees and people granted asylum in the United States.
The class of Democratic attorneys general says singling out these people is illegal, as they do have a lawful claim to SNAP. The group is suing now because it claims that after asking the USDA to clarify, it got no response.
"The law is clear, refugees and other vulnerable legal immigrants become eligible for SNAP once they obtain their green cards and meet other program requirements," Ellison said. "If Trump doesn't like the law, he's welcome
