Motorists traveling ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday may want to allow for extra time as snow blows into southeast Michigan.

In a special weather statement, the National Weather Service said up to an inch of snow Wednesday evening, coupled with winds gusting up to 35 mph, could lead to "rapid reductions of visibility to less than one mile at times."

The weather will affect most of southeast Michigan, including Metro Detroit, the weather service said. The greatest snow accumulations are expected in areas south of Interstate 96, especially in Lenawee and Washtenaw counties.

In addition to reduced visibility, westerly winds could lead to minor drifting of snow on roadways running north and south, "particularly in locations with open exposure," the NWS statement said.
