In a rare move, American faith groups have sent an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging him to rethink Canada’s proposed changes to asylum rules they say have “disturbing” parallels with restrictions south of the border.
The plea by more than three dozen signatories came as the Liberal government is trying to quickly pass the controversial bills C-2 and C-12 related to border security in Parliament. Among other changes, they would bar individuals from making refugee claims in Canada if they’ve been in this country for more than a year.
