AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - With Small Business Saturday approaching, consumers are being encouraged to pay at Panhandle restaurants with cash instead of credit cards when possible.

According to the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA), credit card swipe fees now average 2.5% per sale.

The fee trickles down to consumers, as businesses are pressured to raise prices to turn a significant profit.

“Small businesses do have much of that cost get passed onto consumers, because they’re trying to compete with fairly much larger and broader revenue competitors and adversaries. They’re having to figure out how to keep things affordable, keep the shop open, keep the lights on, and of course drive more people in,” said Aaron Faver, assistant professor of government at Amarillo College.
