SPRINGFIELD — Mayor Domenic J. Sarno wrote to Gov. Maura T. Healey on Wednesday, sounding the alarm about the upcoming loss of some in-patient maternity care in the city.
Mercy Medical Center recently announced that as of Dec. 8, it is temporarily closing its Family Life Center in Springfield.
“Although, they are saying it is ‘temporary,’” Sarno wrote in his letter, “this announcement, whether temporary or permanent will have a huge negative impact on the public health of not just the residents of the City of Springfield but all of Western Massachusetts, while also putting a dire strain on the resources and facilities at the only Level 1 trauma center in the region, Baystate Health.”
Patients will be able to receive prenatal and postnatal care at Mercy, but will have to go elsewhere,
