JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) — South Carolina farmers are harvesting Thanksgiving staples while dealing with federal budget cuts and suspended programs that have affected their operations throughout the year.
At Joseph Fields Farm, crews are still bringing in seasonal vegetables.
“All the green stuff you can think of. You got cabbage, kale, collards. Those are our three staples. You also have red kale. Bok Choy. You got mustard greens and stuff that goes in the ground like turnips,” said Xavier Dillahunt, the farm’s foreman.
While operations are stable now, things were more precarious earlier this year when Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency took an axe to federal agencies. Many of the programs, supported by the United Department of Agriculture, were inspected, suspended
