Measures meant to wean Canadian steel, lumber industries from reliance on U.S. exports
OTTAWA — Canada will limit foreign steel imports and work on cutting freight charges for shipping Canadian steel and lumber.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday in the foyer of the House of Commons, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new measures meant to “transform” Canada’s steel and softwood lumber industry, in light of ongoing trade tensions.
“We know the world’s changing, we know that this decades-long process of our ever-closer economic relationship between Canada and the United States has ended, and a consequence of that many of our strengths have become vulnerabilities,” Carney said during the announcement.
