OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Volunteers gathered to prepare free meals for the community ahead of Thanksgiving Day, slicing pies and packing rolls as part of the annual effort.

Micah Jensen, a three-year volunteer for the Annual Thanksgiving meal in Ottumwa, said the work gives him purpose during the holiday season.

“I find that it just gives me something to do and it makes me feel like part of the community and I get to hang out with my friends for a good reason,” Jensen said.

Jensen said the volunteer work is a chance to pass along compassion to those in need.

“I know that I would appreciate knowing that someone cared enough to at least pack a meal for me if I was in their shoes,” he said.
