A driver only suffered a minor leg injury Wednesday afternoon after a freight train struck her car on a South Brunswick highway, police said.
As the 82-year-old woman’s vehicle approached a level crossing at 3 p.m., she saw the crossing lights on Route 535 at Stults Road flashing and stopped her car, South Brunswick Deputy Police Chief James Ryan told NJ Advance Media.
She didn’t realize that she had actually stopped on the tracks and the vehicle was hit by a Conrail freight train, Ryan said.
The woman was transported to a local hospital by South Brunswick EMS for a minor leg injury, he said.
Conrail responded to the scene and crews cleared the train from the highway, investigators said.
As of 5 p.m. Route 535 was open in both directions between Stults Road and Costco Way, police said
