A woman has died and a man is critically injured following a horrific double shark attack in Australia .
Paramedics were called to Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park - about 220 miles north of Sydney - early on Thursday morning local time. The woman, believed to be in her 20s, died at the scene, while the man, also believed to be in his 20s, was airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle.
A "large bull shark" was likely responsible for the attack , the Department of Primary Industries said, based on forensic analysis. Bull sharks are "one of the few sharks that are potentially dangerous to people", according to the Australian Museum.
Authorities praised a bystander who applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man’s leg before paramedics arrived, saying it "potentially saved his life"
