While your Friday after Thanksgiving may be filled leftovers, shopping and naps, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to stop by a state park or recreation area, free of charge.

Friday, Nov. 28 is the last free park entry day of 2025. Each year the DNR offers free entrance to all 75 state parks and recreation areas four days a year. The fee waiver does not cover camping or rentals.

Although a snowstorm covered Minnesota on Wednesday and another could be on the way this weekend, there are still some events park visitors can attend. • Twinkle Light Trail at Itasca State Park from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. An illuminated, multi-use trail for walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. The lights turn on at dusk.
