Metrolink trams were stopped and searched by police officers on Thursday morning after reports of a man armed with a knife on board.

A suspect has been arrested and Greater Manchester Police stressed there is 'no further risk to the public'. Rush-hour commuters, however, were hit by delays on a number of services as a police operation swung into action.

One witness said they were ordered off a tram by police at the Firswood stop in Stretford , Trafford .

They said: "The police have been have been holding up trams coming into Manchester on the Manchester Airport line. We all had to get off at Firswood whilst they searched it. No one knew what was going on."

GMP said officers initially responded to reports of a man with a knife on Moor Road in Wythenshawe .
